Two boys perished in a canal on Saturday, February 19, causing tragedy in the Akiama Community, Bonny Local Government Area, Rivers State.
The children of Mrs Ogechukwu Thankgod, a widow whose husband worked as a salesman of interior decoration supplies, passed away around two years ago, are 10 and 7.
The two toddlers’ remains were found in the muck when the river had ebbed.
Akiama Creek is behind the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries.
Sources claim that the canal’s culvert was restored last year to stop erosion brought on by flooding.
Ibifubara Allaputa, Director of Pollution at the Bonny Youth Federation (BYF), expressed sorrow that community attempts to discourage kids from swimming in the canal had not yet shown results while expressing concern over the deaths of the two children. He warned that subsequent discoveries of children swimming there would result in their being turned over to the authorities.
