On Thursday, Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike signed a bill allowing women to inherit their family property.
As you may know, many cultures in Nigeria do not allow women to inherit their parents’ properties. Men tend to receive the wealth and in a family where there is no male child, the uncles forcefully take over the parents’ properties.
This is due to the fact that they believe that when immediately woman gets married, she no longer belongs to her father’s family.
Well, this culture has been abolished in Rivers state as Governor Nyesom Wike has signed a bill allowing women to inherit their family property.
The governor while signing the bill, wondered why women were deprived of receiving their family inheritance when they are often the most useful members of society.
He then encouraged women to claim what is theirs, urging them not to be afraid of being threatened by their families.
“I don’t know why it’s a taboo; because you’re a girl, because this is a woman, you’re not entitled to inherit what belongs to your father.
“It is not you who decides whether you will have a girl or you’ll have a boy, it is God.” He said.
